United Methodist Women

United Methodist Women's roots lie in adversity. It was formed in the mid-1800s by women who could not participate as clergy in the Methodist church, but who could become missionaries. The Methodist Women's Missionary Society sponsored and supported female missionaries in the field. The 2009 theme is "Hope in the Face of Adversity."

Today, UMW has several purposes:

  • To better know God

  • To support Methodist Church-sponsored global ministries

  • To assist local charities and other worthy causes

Last year, Mesa Verde UMW raised more than $3,500 for a variety of local mission projects. But the organization is more than just a fundraising machine. There are lots of opportunities for service, fellowship, scholarship, personal growth, and just plain fun! The church calendar is full of UMW-hosted events. The Mesa Verde UMW Mission Team invites all women of the church to become part of this active and dynamic organization.

UMW Circles

Daytime Book Circle meets the second Tuesday during the school year at 10:00 a.m., usually in members' homes. Meetings include the review of a book, devotions, and refreshments. Contact Mary Renner or Barbara Stewart for information.

Evening Book Circle meets the third Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in various homes. As with the daytime group, this one gets together to discuss a book, have devotions, and munch on refreshments at the home of one of the circle's members. (This circle currently is full.)

Knitting Circle meets on the third Tuesdays from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Beginners are welcome. Contact Barbara Stewart for information.

Miriam Circle usually meets the fourth Tuesday at various times, at various locations. You're invited to help out one month of the year by planning or co-hosting an activity. This year's service project is collecting canned goods for SOS. For more information, contact Lorraine Stoneman.

Scrapbooking Circle meets on an irregular schedule that often includes a Midnight Madness event. Participants meet in the Fellowship Hall. Contact Jamie Korando for reservations and more information.

Wholly Piecers' Quilting & Needlework Circle meets the first Thursday of nearly every month in the Fellowship Hall, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Everyone is welcome, whether you quilt, sew, or do needlework, even knitters! If you have any questions or problems with a project, we have some very talented ladies who are more than willing to help. Bring your lunch and join us. Contact Betsy White for any questions.

Watch the Sunday bulletins and this page for the latest information.
